The doctor explains something. You nod. You listen. You try to keep up.
Then you leave — and realize you only understood part of it. A word you didn’t recognize. A number that wasn’t explained. Something important that didn’t fully land.
So you go home and search it. And within minutes, you’re reading things that make you feel worse — not better.
Most people don’t need more medical information. They need a clear explanation of what they were already told.
This is where AI helps.
What this is
A simple way to use AI to understand a diagnosis in plain language, make sense of test results or numbers, know what questions to ask next, and feel more prepared at your next appointment.
Try this
Open ChatGPT, Claude, or any AI tool and paste this:
“My doctor told me I have: [diagnosis or condition]. They also mentioned: [test results, numbers, or next steps]. Can you explain all of this in plain, everyday language? I have no medical background. Then give me a short list of questions I should ask at my next appointment.”
What you’ll actually get back
Someone was told they had “moderate mitral valve regurgitation” and needed to monitor their “ejection fraction.” They didn’t understand either term.
They asked AI to explain it in plain English. What came back: the valve is like a door in the heart that isn’t closing fully, some blood flows backward instead of forward, “moderate” means it’s not minor but not critical, ejection fraction is how well the heart pumps blood, and the doctor wants to track that number over time.
They wrote down a few questions and went to their next appointment feeling prepared instead of lost.
Why this works
Medical language is written for clinicians — not patients. AI helps by translating complex terms into plain language, breaking information into smaller pieces, and letting you ask follow-up questions as many times as you need.
You’re not rushed. You don’t have to pretend you understand. You can keep asking until it makes sense.
How to use this
After your appointment: paste what you were told into AI, ask for a plain-language explanation, and ask follow-up questions if needed.
Before your next appointment: review the explanation, ask for a short list of questions, and bring those with you.
Important note
Use AI as a way to understand — not diagnose. It can explain what your doctor said. It cannot replace medical advice, your doctor’s experience, or your full medical history. Use it to get clarity. Make decisions with your doctor.
Start with what you were told
Think back to your last appointment. What didn’t fully make sense? Paste it in. Ask for a clear explanation. That’s enough to start.
